On September 26, a bus carrying students from the Escuela Normal Rural Raúl Isidro Burgos of Ayotzinapa is driving towards the city of Iguala to protest against a recent education reform and to raise funds for another demonstration to be held in  Mexico City.

The mayor of Iguala, Jose Luis Abarca, instructs the local police to stop and detain the students. Following his orders, the police along with other armed men allegedly belonging to the criminal organization "Guerreros Unidos" organized an ambush against the students.

Three students and three bystanders were killed. Other 43 students were kidnapped by the police and are still missing today.

This event strongly affected public opinion and gave origin to a long series of demontrations against the government of Enrique Peña Nieto all over the country. The government is regarded by a large part of the population to collaborate  with criminal organizations.
